For us, influencer collaborations are a building block within an overarching disease awareness strategy. Our starting point is always the question of what information needs exist and how we can effectively reach patients, their loved ones, or the general public.
Influencers are particularly effective when it comes to communicating complex medical topics in an accessible and relatable way. Their content is therefore closely integrated with other communication measures – such as traditional media relations or own digital channels. It’s crucial that core messages remain consistent, yet are adaptable to the specific channel and target audience.
For disease awareness campaigns, we are very particular about who we work with. Reach alone isn’t a decisive factor. Much more important is whether someone is a good thematic and personal fit for the subject matter.
Among other things, we examine if there’s a credible link to the condition or the broader health landscape, what their tone of voice and engagement with their community is like, and whether content is presented sensitively and responsibly. Often, smaller or mid-sized accounts with an engaged community are more impactful than those with vast reach, because they foster genuine connection and authentic dialogue.
Authenticity and credibility are paramount in the healthcare sector – without trust, disease awareness efforts will fail. Influencers must be able to convey content in a way that integrates seamlessly into their existing communication style and doesn’t feel forced.
This also means that we don’t view influencers as mere mouthpieces. Their personal perspective, their language, and their experiences are an integral component of the communication. At the same time, we meticulously ensure that medical content is accurate and that collaborations are transparently disclosed.
We don’t just ‘bring in’ influencers at the end of a project; rather, they are integrated into the planning as early as possible. In collaboration with the client, we define the specific role influencers can play within the overall strategy and leverage their unique strengths.
In our collaborations, we prioritize clear agreements, expert alignment, and open communication. Simultaneously, we deliberately allow room for their own creative input, because content is only credible when it genuinely resonates with their personal brand and style. In many cases, influencers often provide invaluable insights, as they have an intimate understanding of their community’s questions and needs.
Collaboration with influencers in the healthcare sector requires meticulous attention. Risks can include inaccurate statements, non-compliance with regulatory requirements, or a mismatch between the influencer and the subject matter.
To mitigate these, we invest significant time in thorough selection processes, comprehensive briefings, and expert review of all content. The key is striking a delicate balance: sufficient structure and oversight to ensure safety and compliance, coupled with enough trust to allow for authentic communication that doesn’t compromise credibility.
